ACeOnlillg to estimates at the close of the year 1900. the total number of news papers published in the world was about 50.000 (an increase of 10,000 (hiring the previous ten years), distributed as follows: United States and Canada, 21,789; Germany, 7000; Great Brit ain. 9000: France, 4300: Japan, 2000: Italy, 1500; Austria-Hungary, 1200; Asia. exclusive of (Japan, 1000; Spain, 850: Russia, SOO; Aus tralia, SOO; Greece, 600; Switzerland, 450; Hol land. 200; Belgium, 300; all others, 1000, Of the 21,789 estimated for the United States and Canada, only 924 were published in Canada. According to frequency of issue, they ran thus: weekly. 15.375; monthly. 2930; daily, 2279; semi-monthly. 296; semi-weekly. 470; quarterly, I so: bi-weckly, bi-monthly.68; tri-weekly, 52. The fullest analysis ever made of the C0111 moreial side of newspapers for any one country appeared in the United States Census Report for 1900. It varies considerably from the figures compiled by advertising ageneies in the number of periodicals, because the latter contain numer ous transitory publications of small consequence.

The growth of the periodical press in the United States during the last half-century is best shown by the following table: from 1690 to 1872 (New York, 1S73). Hudson gives much information in regard to foreign jour nalism.
