MOSCOW, UNIVERSITY OF. The oldest and largest institution of higher learning in Russia, organized in 1755. At its inception it consisted of three medicine, and philosophy a total staff of ten professors. mostly brought from Western Europe. The curriculum was very limited in its scope until 1807, when it was reorganized by Alexander I. At the burning of :Moscow in 1812 the university ings were destroyed. The most valuable tions, however. had been previously removed. suspended for a while, was resumed in 1813, and new buildings were erected in In 1835 the number of chairs was increased to thirty-five and a uniform four course es tablished for all departments. In 1841 the Aledico-Surgical Academy was united with the University. The liberal University Act of 1863 gave the professors and students a certain amount of self-government which was during the reactionary of Alexander III. in 1884. In 1902 :Moscow University consisted of the follow ing faculties.: (1) Medicine, (2) law. (3) cal and natural sciences, (4) historieo-philologi eal faculties. 1t offers courses leading to the degree of Candidate. In the medieal school, however, the course live years. the regular

degree being ;' the degrees of Alaster, Doctor of the various sciences, and M.D. are ferred for special investigation. The university library eontains 271,926 volumes and 23,230 pamphlets. The departmental libraries, tories, observatory. museums, number alto gether 33. The medic:II department has 11 special c•linies and hospitals. The teaching stall consists of 27 emeritus, 14 ordinary. and 20 traordinary professors, 175 and 11 instructors. The number of students in 1)102 was 41191, of whom 363 took the historico-philological, 321 the mathematical. 11:43 the natural science. 1673 the law, and 1100 the medical course. As the majority of the students come from the poorer classes. the number of scholar ships is very large, the number in 1902 reaching as high as 645. university is under direct supervision of the Minister of Public Instruetion, who appoints the rect.yr. There is a university council, but its powers are very limited.
