OUDINOT, CHARLES NICOLAS. Duke of Reggio (1767-1847). A Marshal of France. He was born at Bar-le-Due, in the Department of Meuse. France, April 25. 1767. lie entered the army at the age of seventeen. and distill gnished himself in 1790 by suppressing a popu lar insurrection in his native district. He rose quickly. in 1794 hceame general of brigade. and added to his reputation in the war against Prussia and Austria. Ile became general of division in 1799, and received important com mands from Napoleon. In 1505 he received the eommand of ten battalions of the reserve, after wards known as the ondinot Grenadiers. Ile was present at Austerlitz (1805) and .Jena (1806), and defeated the Russians at Ostrolenka February 16, 1807. lle contributed to the suc cess of the French at Friedland. June 140, and after the Pea eC of Tilsit was rewarded with the title of count and a large sum of money. At Wagram (duly 6, 1809) he fully sustained hi, reputation as a general. and soon after was made Marshal of Frame and Duke of Reggio. III 1810 he was charged with the occupation of Holland. Ile was engaged in the disastrous Russian campaign of 1812. when be earned praise by his skillful tactics by which the crossing of the Beresina was protected. He took part in the various battles of 1513 between the French and the Allies, being defeated at Orossbeeren (August 22, 18131, and fighting valiantly at Leipzig. He was one of

the last to abandon Napoleon. During the Hundred Days he remained on his estates. After the second Restoration he became a ister of State, major-guard of the Royal and commander-in-chief of the National Guard. and a peer of France. In 1823 he commanded the First Corps in the invasion of Spaim and was for some time Governor of Nladrid. After the Revolution of duly. 1830, Oudinot retired to his estates. and only at rare intervals appeared in the Chamber of Peers. Ile died in Paris. Sep tember 13, 1847. Ili, Rourenirs were published in 1894. liis son, NIcol...4.s CHARLES VICTOR OCDINot, Duke of Reggio (1791-18631. was a general in the French Ile distinguished himself in Algeria and in the Revolution of 1848, and later became commander-in-chief of the Army of the Alps. In April, 1849. he was pointed general of the French expedition against Rome, and forced the city to surrender uncon ditionally on July 2. After the eon') December 2, 1851. he was arrested and im prisoned. He was soon set at liberty. and spent the remainder of his life in retirement. lie was the author of several books on military matters. He died July 7, 1863.
