PARKE, JOHN GRUBB ( 1827-1900). An American soldier, horn in Chester County, Pa. He graduated at \Vest Point in 1849, and was assigned to the topographical engineers. From 1857 until the outbreak of the Civil War he was engaged in surveying the northwest boundary. do 1861 he was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers, and was placed in command of one of the three brigades in Burnside's North Carolina expedition, during which he assisted at the capture of Roanoke Island February S, 1562) and Newbern (March 14, 154;2), and com manded at the capture of Fort Alacon (April 26, 1562). For these services lie was proinoted major-generai of volunteers in 1562, and was made chief of stair of the Ninth Corp.. with which he served at South :Mountain (September 14, 1502) and Antietam (Septemher 16-17, 1562). Mien his superior, General Burnside, was ap pointed commander of the .1rtny of the Potomac, Parke remained his chief of stall' until after the battle of Fredericksburg (December 13, 1562). He accompanied the Ninth Corps into Kentucky the following Alarch, and commanded it before Vicksburg. At Jackson. (duly JO,

he commanded Sherman's left wing; Ids corps was ordered north, and he took part in the siege of Knoxville (November 15-December 5, I563) and the pursuit of Longstreet into Virginia. Ile participated in the battles of the 1Viblerness and Spottsylvania. the latter pant of the Richmond campaign lie again vommanded the Ninth Corps, which he led at the capture of Petersburg and in the pursuit to Appomattox. He was mustered out of the volunteer service on January 15, 1800, and returned to the boundary survey". Subsequently he had charge of military works, and was superintendent of West Point from 15:57 to 1589, when he retired from active service with the rank of colonel of en gineers and the brevet of major-general in the Regular Armyi, ilea pultlished compilations of Lams of the United Males Pclating to Public.
