He was a cousin of the notorious Shane O'Neill. whom he tried unsuccessfully to oust from the headship of the clan during the latter's compulsory absence in England in 1562. 'Furlough succeeded Shane at his death five year, afterwards. Ile took up arms against the English in 1579. and four years later invaded Tyreonnel. but was beaten back by O'Donnell, and he next en tered into strife for the possession of lands with the Earl of Tyrone, over %vhom he gained a vic tory in 158S, but he resigned in his favor live years afterwards. 1Vhile 'furlough was making a
final effort to regain his lost sovereignty. his castle was destroyed by Tyrone, and himself obliged to hide in a ruin near by, where he died.
ONEONTA, 510-6n'tit. A village in Otsego County, N. Y., 61 miles northeast of Bingham ton: on the Susquehanna River, and on the Delaware and 'Hudson and the Ulster and Dela ware railroads (Map: New York, E 3). It is the seat of the Oneonta State Normal School. and has a public library, a State armory. and the Aurelia Fox Memorial Hospital. The village carries on considerable trade, and its industrial establishments include construction and repair shops of the Delaware and 'Hudson Railroad, a silk mill. planing mill, knitting null, foundries, and cigar factories. Settled about 1800, Oneonta was incorporated in 1848. Under a charter of 1835, the government is vested in a president, annually elected, and a council, chosen on a general ticket. Population, in 1890, 6272: in 1900, 7147.
