real, auxiliary and tones

PART (OF., Fr. part, from Lat. pars. part : connected with Lat. parare, to prepare. nropoy, cporon. I prepared). In unasie, when :a piece of music consists of several series of sounds performed simultaneously. each series is called a part. In a composition a distinction is made between real parts and auxiliary parts. Real parts are those that progress through an as so many individual Vole.... A vocal fugue may be written for three, four, or five voices. It has, therefore, three, four, or five real parts, even if one or u ore voices rest for a number of bars. „I uxiliary parts are in reality but detached tones serving to mark a strong accent by doubling some or all tones contained in the real parts. It is evident that in vocal music no auxiliary parts can recur. But in writing for keyed instruments or full orches tra composers make frequent u-e of such auxil iary tones. In a composition for pianoforte. for example, let us say four nal parts are used. In certain places the composer desires more sonority and there he writes six or even more tones to he struck simultaneously. Any number above four tones constitutes the auxiliary part, for such voices are added only occasionally. Care must

be taken not to introduce auxiliary parts too elosely together, as the ear is apt to conceive them as real parts. and eonsequently to de nmnd adherence to the strict rules of progression exacted in the real parts. A splendid example of the use of auxiliary parts is furnished by the opening bars of lb-ethoven's A Major S'ympliony, where the strings are used in auxiliary parte to give a aeeent to the first heat of the 1. 3. 5, and 7 measures. while the roil parts are given to the wood-wind.

In this example the oboes have a real part : the clarinets enter with a ma/ p in in the third bar; the flutes in the sixth; the horns in the fifth: the bassoons in the seventh bar. The violins throughout have only additional parts or notes. The detached notes of the other instruments before their participation in the runt parts are al,o considered additional parts.
