The sudden death of Airs. Carlyle, in 1866. overwhelmed her husband with grief. Hence forth his life becanie more and more seeluded. II is work was nosy done. In 1867 Carlyle visited Slentone, where he composed part of his personal Reminiscences: then returning to London. con tributed to II am Wan's .1laga.:ine an article entitled "Shooting Niagara," in which he gave his views of democracy. In 1575 appeared the Ea•/y Kings of Norway. In 1574 he received the Prussian royal Order Pour le .1/ t'rite in recogni tion of his having written the life of Frederick the Ili-eat: and in the same year he was °tiered by Disraeli the Grand Cross of the Bath and a liberal pension. but he declined them both, on February 4, 1881, he died at his house in Chelsea, and was buried among his kindred at Fech•le chan. His wife rests beside her father at Ilad dington. A revulsion of feeling regarding Car lyle's character followed. the literary world being shocked by the bitterness and spite abounding in these records. and Fronde was attacked with

great violence for his indiscretion. But time has revived the former admiration for Ca•lyle's genius. Inn a statue was erected to his memory inn the Chelsea embankment, and in, 1895 his house in Cheyne Bow was purchased and opened to the public.
