CHAMPOLLION. JEAN JAcorEs ( 1 TN IS67). usually called ellANIPOI LION Vice kc. A distinguished French elder brother of .1. I'. Champollion (q.v.), the founder of Egyp tology. Ile was horn at Figeae. in the Depart ment of lad. 5. 1778. After completing his collegiate studies, he was for a time libra rian and afterwards professor of (:reel: at nble. lu Ist2st he was appointed keeper of scripts in the Boyal Library in Paris. and twenty years later became librarian at Fontainebleau. Ile was at the satne time prt)fessim in the Ect,le des Charles. Ile died May 1867. in his eighty ninth year. Champollion lirst published a num ber of works on French history and philology.
