DEWEY, Cruittitt (1S37—). An American naval officer, born in :Montpelier. Vt. Ile gradu ated at the United States Naval :leadenly in Ps55, and began active service on the :Mediter ranean statical. In 1562. miller Farragnt. lie was present at the passage if Forts Jackson and `saint Philip in the foe,-or Mississippi, and in 15016.i participated in the attack on l'ort Fisher. Ile became lieutenant-commander io eomniancler in 1572, captain in 1554. and commodore in 1590. His reception ill the United Mates till his return in 1599 was an enthusiastic citation. The same year he was made admiral. a lank previous• ly attained by Farragut and Porter only. .\dmiral Dewey has served on the Lighthouse Board, as chief of the Bureau of Equipment. and as president of the Board of Inspection and Survey. In the months preceding the Presi dential campaign of 1900 his Millie Was promi nently before the country for a time, but his candidacy, from a political standpoint, as not seriously considered. Ile signed the unanimous report delivered by the court to the Secretary of the Navy on December 13, lint further submitted a minority report in which he dissented from cer tain specifications of the principal document.
