EAST'LAKE, Sir ell AR ,ES LOCK ( I 793-1S115). An English historical painter, born at Plymouth, November 17, 1793. the youngest son of George Eastlake. solicitor to the Admiralty and judge advoeate of Plymouth. lie studied in the schoolq of the Royal Academy in 1809. and also under Ilaydon. As early as 1810 the lad's designs attracted attention, and a eommission was given hint by .Teremiall liaimon. the subject being "The Baising of Jairits's 1)anghter." In 1515 East lake was in Paris. studying and copying pietureq from the Louvre, but he left on Slareh 19. ISIS, and was at Plymouth when Napoleon arrived there on board the Mg/crop/ion. In 1S17 he went to Italy. and in 1819 to Greece. After wards he returned to Rome, anon there spent fourteen years. lie devoted himself chiefly 1 o landscape pa inting and la nd sea pe with figures of Italian peasantry. Ile lived principally in ROMP until he was elected an Academician in 1530, when he settled in London. In 1523 he sent to the Royal Academy three views of itome one of which. "The Spartan Isidas," now in possession of 16e Duke of Devon shire, was especially notieed. In 1841 Eastlake was appointed secretary to the Royal Commk sion for deco•ating the Houses of Parliament.
and in 1842 Librarian to the Royal .1ealleiny: in 1843 Keeper of the National Gallery. In 1850 he was kniplited and elected president of the Royal .Seadenty. From that time until his death he was ehielly engaged in selecting piotures to be bought by the Government for the National Gallery. He died in Pisa. December 23. 1865.
Eastlake translated and edited several books on painting, among them Goethe's Theory of Colors (1S-10) and Bugler's of Painting in Italy (1812). lie also wrote many articles for periodicals, and some books, notably Materials for the History of Oil Painting (1817), and Contributions to the Literature of the Fine Arts (1848: 2d series, 1870). As a painter, however, he is less important, being a representative of the academic eclecticism. Among his principal paintings arc "Lord Bvron'.s. Dream" (1827), in the National Gallery. 'London; "Una Delivering the Red Cross Knight" (18301 ; "Gaston de Foix Before the Battle of Ravenna" (1838); and **Christ Blessing Little Children" (1840).
