DIE STERWEG, K, FRIEDRICII ADOLF \\tut ELM ( 1790-1866 . A noted German educator. He was born at Siegel). Prussia, and in ISOS-11 studied at Herborn and Tubingen. He taught at Alannheim and at Worms until was called to the :Model School at Frank fort, was rector of the Latin school. Elher feld. and in 1820 became director of the new Teachers' seminary at Alors, where he laid the foundation of his great reputation as a teacher and educational writer. This led to his appoint ment. in IS32, as director of the Seminary for City Schools in Berlin, from which post. he re tired in 1S-17. after having for years been involved in ,erious disagreements with the authorities re garding his reformatory views in connection with the most important phases of higher education. Ile was pensioned by the Government in 1850. and thenceforth propagated his ideas only by his literary efforts. He was elected to the Prus sian Diet in IS5S. Diesterweg stands in the foremost rank among modern educators. and

has rendered the greatest service to education by his training of teachers. A s a follower Pestalozzi. he aimed at making every subject of instruction a means of education. and by own example. as well as through his writ ings. has exercised a far-reaching influence on the development of his method in the various branches of instruction. He advocated his peda gogical views in the llheinisehe Bliitter fur Erzie hung nerd t'ntcr•icht, founded by him in 1827. and afterwards also in the Padagogischcs Jahr buch, which he established in Berlin in 1551.
