The processes connected with tho prepara tion and spinning of the cotton fibres are de scribed under ARKIVRIGHT ; COTTON SPINNI/0 ; and THREAD. The weaving of the yarn it.° piece-goods is described under FIISTLN ; VELVET ; and WEavpso. The imparting of colour and design to the woven clotl is treated under BANDANA; COTTON or CA'SCO PRINTING ; and DYEING. The statistics &the manufacture, in respect to the number of factories, power-looms, work-people, &c., are given under FACTORIES. Mr. McCullucl. esti mates that, allowing for old persons and chil dren dependent upon those actually employed in the various departments of the cotton ma nufacture, and in the construction and re pairs of the machinery and buildings required to carry it on, the entire manufacture in Great Britain must furnish subsistence for at least 1,250,000 persons.

Mr. Kennedy estimated the value of the cotton manufactures produced in Great Bri tain in 1832 at about 25,000,000/. Mr. Baines made the estimate for 1833 at about 31,000,0001. Mr. McCulloch's estimate for 1830 was about 31,000,0001. Mr. Porter's estimate for 1811

was about 49,000,000/. It is admitted that there are no exact data for determining these quantities ; but the above are approximately correct. The capital invested is supposed to amount to 30,000,0001. or 35,000,0001.

The real or declared value of manufactured cotton goods exported from this country in various years was as follows:— Years.

The cotton manufacture is now largely con ducted in the United States, France, Belgium, Germany, and other countries ; and specimens from all those countries will be found in the forthcoming Industrial Exhibition.
