AASVOGEL, the name by which the South African species of vultures are known. Literally it means "carrion-bird." "A" BATTERY, a battery which provides heating current for the filament of a vacuum tube (see THERMIONIC VALVE).

the fifth month of the ecclesiastical year of the Jews. It corresponds to the period of July 15 to Aug. 15. The word is of Babylonian origin, adopted by the Jews after the Babylonian exile. On the ninth is kept the Fast of Ab, or the Black Fast, to bewail the destruction of the first temple by Nebuchadrezzar (586 B.c.) and of the second by Titus (A.D. 7o).
