ABBAZIA, province of Fiume, Italy, 56m. S.E. of Trieste by rail. Pop. (1931), 3,666 (town), 6,233 (commune, which is called Volosca-Abbazia). It is on the Gulf of Quarnero at the foot of the Monte Maggiore (4,58oft.), sheltered and surrounded by laurel woods. The average temperature is 5o°F. (winter), and 77°F. (summer). The old abbey, San Giacomo al Palo, whence the town's name, is now a villa. Abbazialused to have 50,000 visitors per annum. The whole sea-coast to the north and south is rocky and picturesque.
