ADELIE LAND, Antarctic land situated on the polar circle in longitude 140° E., discovered by the Frenchman Dumont d'Urville in 1840. The steep coasts, rising to heights of from 3,25o to 4,000ft. are almost unapproachable. Although covered with snow and ice and completely uninhabited, it has possibilities of utilization for whale-fishing. (See also ANTARCTIC REGIONS.)
