ADULIS (mod. Zula).—An ancient city of Eritrea. Accord ing to Pliny, it was founded by slaves who had fled from their Egyptian masters. Excavations have led to the discovery of a considerable amount of prehistoric pottery, and of various build ings, including an altar of the Sun and two Christian churches. The principal periods of its prosperity were the Ptolemaic, Graeco-Roman and Christian. The city, as far as can be ascer tained, had neither fortifications nor walls.
