AGGLOMERATE, in geology, the name applied to the coarse, fragmental accumulations that accompany explosive erup tions (see VOLCANO). The material may consist of blocks of lava, or of fragments of rock torn off from the sides of the volcanic pipe, or of both. An agglomerate differs only from a volcanic ash in the larger size of the fragments, which are usually sharply angular.
