AKHALTSIKH, a town in the Georgian S.S.R. It is situated in 41 ° 4o' N. and 4 2 ° 55' E. at an altitude of 3,3 7 5 f t. on a tribu tary of the Kura river. The new town is on the right bank, the old on the left. Pop. (19 2 6) about 15,000. It was the capital of Turkish Armenia from 1579 until it was captured by the Russians in 1828. There is trade in silk, honey and wax. Brown coal is found in the district. Its silver filigree work is famous. It is on the trade route to Turkey for caravans, but it has no railway com munications.
