ALBERT II. German king, king of Bohemia and Hungary, and (as Albert V.) duke of Austria, was born on Aug. Io, 1397, the son of Albert IV. of Habsburg, duke of Austria, He succeeded to the duchy of Austria on his father's death in 1404, and in 1438 succeeded his father-in-law, Sigismund. as Ger man king, though he does not appear to have sought election.
He was crowned king of Hungary and of Bohemia but was un able to obtain possession of the latter country. His reign, which lasted less than two years, was spent in the defence of Hungary against the Turks. He died at Langendorf on Oct. 27, 1439. Albert was an energetic and warlike prince, whose short reign gave great promise of usefulness for Germany.
