ALIWAL, a village in British India, Ludhiana district, Pun jab, on the left bank of the Sutlej, famous as the scene of a great battle of the first Sikh War (q.v.). In Jan. 1846 it was held by a Sikh army, which had crossed the river and threatened Ludhiana. On the 28th Sir Harry Smith attacked, and after a desperate struggle pushed the enemy into the river, where large numbers_perished, leaving 67 guns to the victors.
