ALLENTIACAN, a small independent linguistic stock of South American Indians, so called from the Allentiacs or Huarpes (Guarpes) who were its most important tribe. The Allentiacs lived in western Argentina, in the vicinity of the lagoon of Huana cache on the borders of the provinces of San Luis and Mendoza. They were a fierce tribe of low culture, and have, with most of their neighbours, been extinct since the latter part of the 18th century.
