ALLODIUM, that portion of land allotted to an individual by the chief, as representing the community, in the early Anglo Saxon settlement of Britain. It usually consisted of the home stead, and was regarded as the property of the family. It was free from rent and services. Later, allodium is the regular Latin translation of bocland (q.v.).
