ALMACANTAR (also written ALMUCANTAR), an astro nomical term for a small circle of the sphere parallel to the horizon ; when two stars are in the same almacantar they have the same altitude. The term is also given (188o) to instruments of a pattern invented by S. C. Chandler to determine the latitude or the time by observing the times of transit of stars across a fixed almacantar.
