ALMSHOUSE, a building for the residence of poor or aged people. In England the term is generally used of those built and endowed by private charity and frequently better treatment is given to the inmates than in the publicly supported workhouses. In America the term is synonymous with "poorhouse" (work house). An interesting mediaeval example is the Hospital of St. Cross, near Winchester, founded 1136.
