ALSEN, a Danish island in the Baltic, off the coast of Slesvig, in the Little Belt. It was Danish property until 1864 when it was incorporated with Germany. It was of strategic importance as it guarded an approach from the North sea to the Baltic. After 1919 it was again in Danish hands. The island is fertile and well wooded and Sondorborg, the capital, has a good harbour. Most of the inhabitants speak Danish. Area of island 105 sq.m.
