ALTMUHL, a river in Bavaria, Germany, an important left bank tributary of the Danube, rising in the Franconian plateau, and after a tortuous course of 116m. alternatively through mead ows and in romantic gorges, joining the Danube at Kelheim. It is navigable up to Dietfurt (i8m.), whence the Ludwigscanal ( loom. long) leads to Bamberg on the Regnitz, thus establishing communication between Danube and Rhine.
