ALTUS, a city of south-western Oklahoma, U.S.A., 15m. from the Red river; the county seat of Jackson county. It is served by the Frisco, the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railways. The population in 192o was 2 (95% native white), and in 193o, after annexations of territory, was 8,439 by the United States census. It is a shipping point for alfalfa, cotton and grain, and has 35 industrial plants and 25 wholesale houses. The city was founded jn 1891 and incorporated in 1909.
