ALZEY, a town in Hesse, Germany, tom. S.S.W. of Mainz. Pop. It is mentioned in the Nibelungenlied. In 1277 it became an imperial city, and in 162o was sacked by the Span iards and in 1689 burnt by the French. During the Napoleonic wars it was annexed to France and in 1815 passed to the grand duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. It has considerable trade in wine.
