AMERICAN SOCIETY OF NATURALISTS is an "as sociation of working naturalists for the discussion of methods of investigation and instruction, laboratory technique and museum administration, and other topics of interest to investigators and teachers of natural history; and for the adoption of such measures as shall tend to the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of natural history in the community." It was founded at Springfield, Mass., in 1883. With the development of special societies in the different biological fields the position of the naturalists has become more general, and since 1908 the programmes have related particu larly to the subject of organic evolution. Meetings are held annu ally and consist of an afternoon symposium and an evening address by the president, ordinarily on some general aspect of evolution. Membership in 1927 was 438.
