AMERSFOORT, town in the province of Utrecht, Holland, on the navigable Eem, and a junction station 14m. by rail N.E. by E. of Utrecht. Pop. (1900) 19,089, (1930) 38,549. It is situ ated among sandy heaths and woods. The Koppelpoort, an old gateway, ends an avenue bordering the canal. The large plain church of St. George dates from the 13th century. There is a Jansenist church, with seminary attached, a town hall and a court of primary jurisdiction.- Its chemical- and tobacco industries received a great impetus during Holland's neutrality (1914-18).
