AMHERST, county town, Cumberland county, port of entry in Nova Scotia, Canada, at the head of Chignecto bay and on tin. Canadian National railway, 138m. from Halifax. Pop. (1931) It is in a rich agricultural and mining district, contains numerous factories, and has an especially large trade in lumber and ship-building. It distributes goods, and exports railway carriages, engines, boilers, stoves, etc.
