AMPLITUDE, the extreme range of a fluctuating quantity. In mathematics and physics the word is generally used in con nection with periodic functions or motions and denotes the max imum difference or displacement from the mean value (sometimes called the semi-amplitude since the whole range is double) . In navigation the amplitude of a heavenly body is the angular dis tance of the point at which it rises or sets from the east or west point.
