ANDAMENTO (Ital.), a musical term signifying the longer and more extended type of fugal subject, as distinguished from that of the shorter and more compact kind, or soggetto, consisting of a single brief theme. By German writers however the term is more often applied, not to a fugue's subject matter, but to its episodes—another instance of the confusion of practice so often prevailing in the case of musical terminology.
