ANNAPOLIS ROYAL, Nova Scotia, capital of Annapolis county and till 175o of Nova Scotia; on an arm, of the Bay of Fundy, at the mouth of the Annapolis river, 95m. W. of Halifax; on the main Canadian Pacific railway. Pop. (1931) 739. It is one of the oldest settlements in North America, founded in 1605 by the French, who called it Port Royal. It was captured by the British in 1710, ceded to them by the treaty of Utrecht in 1713, and renamed in honour of Queen Anne. Its good harbour and beautiful surroundings make it a summer resort. The town is surrounded by apple orchards; fruit is exported.
