AFFRE, DENIS AUGUSTE ( 793-1848) , archbishop of Paris, was born at Saint-Rome-de-Tarn, on Sept. 27 1793. He became archbishop of Paris in 1840. His episcopate is chiefly remembered for its tragic close. During the riots of June 23-26, 1848, the archbishop mounted a barricade in the Faubourg St. Antoine and was hit by a stray bullet.
