ALFANO, FRANCO (1876– ), Italian composer_ was born at Posilipo, near Naples, March 8, 1876. He studied at Naples and Leipzig and by his numerous works for the stage has acquired a leading position among his contemporaries. He has also written orchestral and chamber works of merit. For a time he was director of the Liceo Musicale Rossini at Bologna and later went to Turin in a similar capacity. To him was entrusted the task of completing Puccini's unfinished opera Turandot.
