AISLABIE, JOHN (167o-1742), English politician, born Dec. 7, 167o. He was made chancellor of the Exchequer in 1718, and supported the proposal of the South Sea Company to pay off the national debt. At the collapse of the company he was imprisoned in the Tower with other politicians accused of at tempting to profit fraudulently from the scheme, but was soon released, through Walpole's intervention.
