ANGERSTEIN, JOHN JULIUS London merchant and patron of the fine arts, was born at St. Petersburg and settled in London about 1749. His collection of paintings, consisting of about 4o of the most exquisite specimens of the art, purchased by the British Government by a vote of £6o,000, on his death, Jan. 2 2 1823, formed the nucleus of the National Gallery: Angerstein was a great friend of Sir Thomas Lawrence, who helped him in the collection of his pictures and painted a portrait of him, which was given to the National Gallery by William IV.
