ABICH, OTTO WILHELM HERMANN VON (18o6 1886), German mineralogist, geologist and traveller, was born in Berlin on Dec. I1, 18o6, and died in Vienna on July 1, 1886. His earliest scientific work related to spinels and other minerals, and later he made special studies of fumaroles, of the mineral deposits around volcanic vents and of the structure of volcanoes. The mineral Abichite was named after him.
His works include: Vues illustratives de quelques phinomenes geologiques, prises sur le V esuve et l'Etna, pendant les armies 1833 et 1834 (Berlin, 1836) ; Ueber die Natur and den Zusammenhang der vulcanischen Bildungen (Brunswick, 1841) ; Geologische For schungen in den Kaukasischen Liindern (1878, 1882 and 1887).
