ABBOTT, SIR JAMES (1807-1896), British soldier, edu cated at the Military College, Addiscombe. He served in the Bengal Artillery at the siege of Bhurtpore, 1825-26. He was the first Englishman to visit Khiva, where he was sent on a mission in 1839. During the Sikh war in 1849-50, he held Hazara, of which he was commissioner from 1847-54. He died Oct. 6, 1896.
