ABELL, SIR WESTCOTT STILE ), naval engineer, chief ship surveyor at Lloyds Register of Shipping. From 1910-14 he was professor of naval architecture at the Uni versity of Liverpool. A member of various boards, including two committees of the Board of Trade, on the Internationalization of the Load Line of Ships in 1913, and on Shipping and Shipbuilding in 1916, he became technical adviser to the Controller of Shipping in 1917, and was president of the Institute of Marine Engineers 1924-25. He was given a K.B.E. in 1920. His writings include The Ship and her Work and contributions to the Transactions of the Naval Institute of Architects, etc.
