AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, THE, was incorporated in 1901. It was a consolidation of 65 manufacturers of metal con tainers for foods, chemicals, tobacco, paints and many other products, and is the leading producer in its field. Its manufactur ing plants are situated in 52 cities of the United States (18 States), Canada and Hawaii. The company's products include, be sides both tin and fibre cans, packages and metal receptacles of many kinds, metalware, sheet-metal and other metal manufac tures, as well as machinery and tools for all of its activities; also, products and materials originating from such manufactures or found useful in connection with them.

From T903 to the plant and real estate account increased from $77,000,000 to $140,000,000; the corporate surplus increased $72,366,776, reaching a total of $75,029,051 in 1934. Important improvements in buildings and equipment have been made, and new factories have been built as business has increased. In 1934 the company's total current assets were $60,001,291; total assets, net working capital aggregated $43,108,565, and the capital stock was 7% cumulative Preferred (par $ioo), and Common (par $25).
