GARVIE, ALFRED ERNEST ) English di vine, was born on Aug. 29, 1861 at Zyrardow, Russian Poland; he was educated privately in Poland and at George Watson's College, Edinburgh. He studied for a year at Edinburgh Uni versity (1878-79), and after four years in business in Glasgow, spent eight years in study at Glasgow and at Oxford. He was ap pointed in 1903 a professor at Hackney and New Colleges, London, becoming in 1907 principal of New College. In 1922 he was ap pointed principal of Hackney College, and from 1924 onward held both posts until his retirement in His numerous publications include: The Ritschlian Theology (1899) ; Handbook of Christian Apologetics (1913) ; The Christian Doctrine of the Godhead (1925) ; and The Preachers of the Church (1926).
