GARBORG, ARNE EVENSEN (1851-1924), Norwegian writer, was born on Jan. 25, 1851, at Thime. He joined the move ment for the creation of a Norwegian literary language based on the landsmaal or peasant dialect derived from old Norsk, in place of the Dano-Norwegian literary medium. He wrote a series of novels deeply penetrated by religious feeling. In 1895 he wrote a cycle of lyric poems in the landsmaal, Haugtussa (1895), which describe a young girl's belief in the supernatural. He also trans lated the Odyssey (1918) and a selection from the Mahabharata (1921), and, for representation at the landsmaal theatre, which he and his wife had founded, Holberg's classical comedy, Jeppe paa Berget (1921). His collected works, Skri f ter i samling, began to appear in 1908. Garborg died on Jan. 14, 1924, at Asker.
