GLASS, CARTER ), American politician, was born at Lynchburg, Va., on an. 4, 1858. He received his education in the Lynchburg schools and learned the printer's trade, which he followed for several years, eventually becoming proprietor of the Lynchburg Daily News and Daily Advance. He was elected to the Virginia State senate for two terms (1899-1903) and was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 190 1. He was elected in 1902 to the national House of Representatives, and thereafter was continuously re-elected until his resignation in 1918. As chairman of the House banking committee he was active in fram ing and passing the Federal Reserve Bank law. In 1918 he entered President Wilson's cabinet as secretary of the Treasury. Under his guidance the fifth Liberty Loan was floated in April, 1919. In Nov. 1919 he resigned after his appointment to the United States Senate, where he remained by election (1924 and 193o).
