GELADA, a large species of baboon, Theropithecus gelada, differing from the members of the genus Papio (see BABOON) by the nostrils being situated some distance from the tip of the muzzle. In the heavy mantle of long brown hair covering the f ore quarters of the old males, with the exception of the bare chest, which is reddish flesh-colour, the gelada recalls the Arabian baboon (Papio hamadryas) . The gelada inhabits the mountains of Abys sinia, where it descends in droves to pillage cultivated lands. A second species, T. obscurus, inhabits eastern Abyssinia.
