GELATI, a village in the Georgian S.S.R., II m. east of the town of Kutais, on a rocky spur 705 ft. above sea level in the valley of the Rion, which is growing in importance because of coal mines. It was an ancient monastery and its principal church, a sandstone cathedral, dates from the end of the eleventh cen tury, and contains the royal crown of the former Georgian king dom of Imeretia, besides ancient mss., ecclesiological furniture, and fresco portraits of the kings of Imeretia.
