GEORGE V. (1819-I878), king of Hanover, was the only son of Ernest Augustus, king of Hanover, and consequently a grandson of George III. of England. Born on May 27, 1819, he became totally blind in 1833. He succeeded his father in 1851. After the Prussian annexation of Hanover (q.v.) in 1866, he lived in Austria and France, and died on June 12, 1878.
