GERMISTON, in Transvaal, 9 m. E. of Johannesburg. Alti tude 5,478 ft. Pop. whites, 29,02o coloured. It is an important railway junction, where lines meet from Natal and Cape Colony ports, Laurenco Marques, Pretoria and Johannes burg. Germiston is situated in the heart of the Witwatersrand gold mining area, and has a large gold refinery. Much land has been taken up since 1917 for industrial sites.
