GODIN, JEAN BAPTISTE ANDRE French socialist, was born on Jan. 26, 1817 at Esqueheries (Aisne). In 1859 he made his castings manufactory at Guise into a Fourier ist f amilistere or community settlement, which comprised, in addition to the workshops, buildings to house the work-people, crèches, hospital, refreshment rooms, recreation rooms, stores for the purchase of every necessity, and a large theatre. In 188o the whole was turned into a co-operative society, and eventually became the property of the workers.
Godin was the author of Solutions sociales (1871) ; Les Socialistes et les droits du travail (1874) ; Mutualite sociale (188o) ; La Republique du travail et la ref orme parlementaire (1889) .
